West Fork Road

3/22/2008

Happy Easter! Curt is planning to groom the West Fork Rd. Sunday morning. Should be great skiing, with recent snow and cool temp's. NOTE: the Forest Service will be plowing the West Fork Rd. later in the week and bringing in machinery to log out the windfall in the campgrounds. The word is no public access while they log (about 3, 4 weeks). Call 446-2103 for F.S. information.

Snow at RLN will surprise you! I was able to groom 5k of skate and track lanes. We have lots going on for the whole family tomorrow. The 5 and 10k freestyle should be fast and fun. This course lets anyone ski pretty fast and if you want to go all out there is nothing to hold you back. There will even be snowshoing. Come have fun. Call Sylvan Peak for information. 446-1771

Mike groomed the West Fork Road Thursday. Lots of new snow, deeper past Basin. Soft conditions in the warm afternoons

Around 10" of very dense snow covered the area like a perfect white blanket overnight. Today all front trails were gone over twice with a roller. Tracks were laid down with the Ginzu Groomer on the Figure Eight and Volunteer trails. All of the Far Side has been rolled once. This could be the best snowfall this season. Come enjoy the spring skiing. Curt

Most trails were groomed on Wednesday. Since Sunday 6" new snow fell. Skiing has been good to excellent each day until noon when things start to get soft. Don't get lazy now, get a jump on your summer fitness at RLN!

We have been experiencing warm, sunny days which make for soft snow and difficulty grooming. Hilltops and open areas have been losing snow, but the trails in the meadows and trees are holding up nicely. Expect icey conditions early in the day.

Eight inches off new snow and all Far Side and front trails are rolled out. Packed powder and dynamite scenery. Tracks to be set when the wind backs off. We will groom the West Fork soon. As you can tell, We need another snow machine and will be raising funds soon. If you can help, please contact a BRTA board member or inquire at Sylvan Peak in RL. It is a great day to be out, come ski. Thanks, Curt

Skating at RLN is good. All useable trails in the lower area were groomed yesterday evening and this morning. Trails in and around the trees have excellent snow. Meadow trails have been hit hard by wind and sun. Thursday the Silver Run loops had wonderful snow. The West Fork Road is very good for skiing because of three snowfalls during the week totalling over 7"s and Mike's grooming. We will keep you posted on the WF. If the forecast holds true the WF road will be the best skiing between here and Pahaska near Cody or Bohart Ranch next to Bridger Bowl.

West Fork Road

2/13/2008

We finally got a window of time, weather and snow today and Mike groomed the West Fork Road. Then the wind came up and blew in the classic tracks, but skiing is very good, all the way to Cascade Campground.

From COLD to WARM! The snow got pretty warm this morning, but I got most of the Front Side groomed for skate and track. Conditions are very good (soft in the sun). It's hard to get to the Farside (some open grass on the hill) so it is not groomed. We haven't groomed the West Fork Road...waiting for 3-4" of snow to make it goomable. Grant

The front trails were groomed Tuesday after 1.5 inches of new snow fell. Large drifts in the warming hut area have been levelled and the practice hill is in good shape. Conditions are more than fair.

West Fork Road

Mike groomed the West Fork Road yesterday, but the first two miles (to Basin Campground) were hardpacked and windblown, so ineffective grooming. Past the campground, much better snow conditions and groomed another two miles.

Calm, clear, warm, great trails, come ski. All trails are groomed, tracks set on lower trails, the far side is rolled but not tracked. Today the Beartooth Nordic and Hiking Club ladies were the first to ski our newest trail. Rich and Michelle from Billings are hooked on RLN. This little area is one of the prettiest places to ski...period. Did I mention we have great tracks and it only cost $5 for a day pass? Curt

The Ridge trail loops and the Volunteer trail loops are Ginzu groomed for skating and classic style skiing. On Friday we will touch up the figure 8 loop to complete grooming of the lower trails. Work continues on the Far Side trails and they should be ready this week end. Conditions are excellent.

Curt and Mike groomed the West Fork Road Monday pm...lots of new snow to plow through. It is still soft due to the depth, but is in good shape as reported by several skiers. The "Front Side" (ie, lower meadows area) of the Nordic Center was groomed Tuesday by Bob, and is in great shape. The Far Side was groomed Sunday and has LOTS of snow. Temperatures have moderated (20 degrees Tues. and Tues. night). More snow is falling! Note: we are planning to have a SNOFONE report available soon. We will let you know here.

Light snow since early this morning, about 6" so far (6 P.M.). Temps were around zero at 3 P.M. and dropping. The far side is machine packed and ready to roll when this storm passes. Curt and Jack Clinton marked the open trails with sticks so they could be found by groomers and all trails were rolled out to pack new snow. The only tracks are skier made or in the trees. Definate green wax weather and, did I mention how beautiful deep snow is? The moon came out clear and bright for our Saturday night ski, temps wer in the 20's and lots of people enjoyed a wonderful time., don't miss the next one!

Two inches overnight. All of the lower trails are groomed for classic and skating. The far side is roughed in and rolled enough to classic but no tracks are set. 24 degrees, cloudy and calm. Moonlight ski tonight, bring headlamps, we will have chili hot chocolate and snacks, a trail pass is $5 and $3 for small children. For the first time this morning Mike Watson helped with grooming RLN. He was great help and I thank him and look forward to working with him. Come ski, it can't bet much better! Curt Fleck

Oceans of snow. Bob Johnson and Curt Fleck rolled the area twice to keep up with the 2" an hour snowfall. Groomers will be out at 7 A. M. to prepare tracks and skate lanes for Saturday's clinics and moonlight ski. The West Fork of Rock Creek has over a foot of new snow at the parking area. Once we get RLN in shape we will set tracks there. Come to Red Lodge to see the winter wonderland we have been waiting for!

Just over an inch of snow fell on RLN today. We plan on grooming Friday and or Saturday. Skiing is surprisingly good and we are just 3 inches away from wonderful conditions. Moonlight ski is on for Saturday night. Th West Fork trail got about 4 inches and is great skiing. We will contact groomers and keep you posted.

One half inch new snow. About 5k of our best trails have nice snow. Skateing is fun on firm base with packed powder. Tracks are intermittant with the best tracks close to trees. There is plenty of snow for a nice Nordic fix.

The best skiing is in the trees. Skating is best mid-morning when the snow softens.Three days and nights of warm temps and high winds have prevented grooming. Conditions are below average. This morning the wind finally switched directions and is now blowing hard out of the north-west. Temperatures are forecast to drop and there is a good chance of snow.

New Years Day was sunny and cold with great conditions and a supper turn-out. Families are having a great time as kids evolve into good nordic skiers, adults who haven't skied for years are re-discovering the joy of snow and athletes are coming from miles around for the great terrain and conditions. 10k skate prepared and 5k tracked Come join us all season!

Much of the "Front Side" was groomed today, after some wind yesterday. Cold nights (around 15) have helped preserve our snow for good skiing.

The Nordic Center has been groomed-13 km skating, 7 km classic-and with temps in the teens and low 20's, conditions are great! See you at the moonlight ski tonight (Sat.) The WEST FORK ROAD is groomed to Basin Campground (about 2 miles) for skate and classic

Sunny Sunday

12/9/2007

The "front" of the Nordic Area is groomed for track and skate. The Far Side is not groomed due to some road work that makes it difficult to get the groomer back there-you can still break trail and ski there. Skies are clear, temp is about +8 at dawn, with a south breeze and warmer forecast. We have had about one or two inches of very dry snow the past 48 hrs.

New Snow

12/6/2007

The Nordic Center received about 3-4" of new snow last night. The snow was too warm to groom but we rolled all the trails except the Far Side. We'll have trails groomed and tracks set for the weekend.

Sunday, Dec. 2

12/2/2007

All but the Farside was groomed this morning. Temperature was +20 at dawn, mostly clear, and the wind was about 15 mph at 9:00. Skiing is excellent in the trees, trails are slightly windblown in the open.

December 1

12/1/2007

Welcome to December in Red Lodge. Cold temp's around 0 to +10F and north breezes have kept the Nordic Center snow in good shape the past couple of days. We received about 3" of fresh snow yesterday on a solid base. All lower (meadow) trails were groomed Friday. Great conditions! Dress warm. We have not groomed the West Fork road yet and will wait until utility trucks and salvage operations are completed before grooming (still some aftermath from our big wind storm). But the road is good for skiing and snowshoeing. And the Forest Service reports that the Silver Run Trails are open and skiable.

Early Opening

11/27/2007

Over a foot of snow before Thanksgiving gave us a treat at the Nordic Center. Grooming on many trails provided great skiing earlier than usual. Get your season passes (online at www.beartoothtrails.org or stop in at Sylvan Peak, downtown Red Lodge) and get out there.
